INDOPOSCO.ID – The government, through Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, has urged the public not to panic in response to volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. Residents have been advised to take greater health precautions, particularly against respiratory, eye, and skin problems.
Budi said exposure to volcanic ash could affect the health of people living in affected areas. Therefore, residents are advised to limit outdoor activities while volcanic ash remains present.
“In areas exposed to volcanic ash, stay indoors to protect your respiratory health. If you need to go outside, make sure to wear a mask,” Budi said in a statement on Sunday (Sept. 6, 2026).
He also urged people who must go outside to use additional protective measures, such as masks and protective eyewear. After returning home, residents are advised to clean themselves promptly to reduce the risk of volcanic ash exposure.
“Do not panic, but continue to pay attention to your health, particularly your respiratory system, eyes, and skin,” he said.
According to Budi, the government has also prepared preventive measures in case volcanic ash exposure causes health problems. Community health centers (puskesmas) in affected areas have been instructed to strengthen their preparedness in anticipation of a possible increase in respiratory cases.
In addition, preventive measures include activating health command posts, known as the Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC). The facility is part of the government’s efforts to ensure a rapid health response in the event of an emergency.
Volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau has not only affected public health. The distribution of volcanic material has also disrupted flight operations in several areas.
Based on monitoring by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), at least three regencies have been reported to be affected by Mount Anak Krakatau’s volcanic activity: South Lampung, Tanggamus, and Pandeglang.
People in affected areas are urged to continue following information and instructions from the government and relevant authorities. Vigilance is necessary to anticipate further impacts of the volcanic activity, particularly those affecting public health and safety. (nas)
