INDOPOSCO.ID – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecast that a number of major cities across Indonesia are likely to experience rainy weather with varying intensities, with some areas also expected to be hit by thunderstorms.
BMKG forecaster Diah Ayu, in an online weather forecast monitored from Jakarta on Monday (Jan. 5, 2026), said cloudy conditions are expected to prevail over Banda Aceh, Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Padang and Bengkulu.
“There is potential for light rain in Medan, Pangkal Pinang, Bandar Lampung, as well as parts of Java and most areas of Kalimantan,” she said.
In more detail, Sumatra is expected to see light rain in Medan, Bandar Lampung and Pangkal Pinang, while thunderstorms are forecast in Jambi.
On Java Island, BMKG predicts light rain in Jakarta, Serang and Bandung, thunderstorms in Surabaya, and thick cloud cover in Yogyakarta.
For Kalimantan, BMKG has mapped the potential for intermittent light rain in Pontianak, Tanjung Selor, Samarinda, Palangkaraya and Banjarmasin.
In central Indonesia, light rain is expected in Denpasar, thunderstorms in Kupang, and cloudy weather in Mataram.
Light rain is also forecast for Gorontalo, Palu and Makassar. Meanwhile, moderate rain is predicted in Manado and Mamuju, with thunderstorms likely to occur in Kendari.
Diah added that in eastern Indonesia, cloudy weather is forecast for Ambon, while light rain is expected in Sorong, Manokwari and Jayapura. Moderate rain is predicted in Ternate, Nabire and Jayawijaya, while thunderstorms may hit Merauke. (aro)
