INDOPOSCO.ID – President Prabowo Subianto has declared that Indonesia will soon stop importing fuel, as the government moves toward achieving energy self-sufficiency in the near future.
“We have already achieved food self-sufficiency, and soon we will achieve fuel self-sufficiency as well. We will no longer import fuel,” Prabowo said while visiting a fishermen’s village in South Leato, Dumbo Raya District, Gorontalo, on Saturday (May 9, 2026).
He stressed the importance of independently controlling and properly managing the nation’s resources as a major and resource-rich country.
“We are a wealthy nation, but what matters now is that we must be able to control our wealth and manage it properly,” Prabowo stated.
He warned that negligence and poor leadership could result in Indonesia’s natural wealth being exploited by foreign nations.
“If we are complacent, if our leaders are not honest or act recklessly, then our wealth will be taken by other nations,” he said.
Prabowo had previously raised the issue of achieving fuel self-sufficiency during the International Workers’ Day commemoration at Monas in Central Jakarta on May 1, 2026.
“Our fuel supply remains secure. In just a few more years, we will achieve fuel self-sufficiency and energy self-sufficiency,” he added.
Currently, around 50 to 60 percent of Indonesia’s gasoline demand is still met through imports. The country is estimated to import around 20 million kiloliters of gasoline annually.
National fuel demand stands at approximately 1.5–1.6 million barrels per day, while domestic refinery capacity is only able to process around 1.1–1.2 million barrels per day. (dan)
