INDOPOSCO.ID – Amid escalating military tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, United States President Donald Trump revealed that Washington is engaged in active negotiations with Iran following conflicting claims of attacks exchanged on Thursday (May 7, 2026).
Trump boasted that the United States had “brought Iran down” and reiterated his earlier claim that U.S. forces had sunk several Iranian vessels.
Speaking about ongoing peace efforts, Trump said Tehran and Washington were still in talks, while asserting that Iran was in an increasingly vulnerable position.
“The plan is very simple. Iran cannot have nuclear weapons, cannot have a nuclear bomb, and will not have one,” Trump said, as quoted by Sky News on Friday (May 8, 2026).
“They have already agreed to it. Let’s see whether they are willing to sign it,” he added.
Despite the clashes in the strategic waterway, Trump insisted that the ceasefire remained in effect, while warning that the United States would launch stronger attacks if Iran refused to sign an agreement.
Trump’s stance on the conflict in the Middle East has appeared inconsistent. Earlier this week, he announced a halt to military escort operations for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday (May 5, 2026), local time.
Just a day before suspending the operation, Trump had unveiled “Project Freedom,” an initiative aimed at ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz by pledging military escorts for commercial vessels until the area was deemed fully secure.(dan)
