INDOPOSCO.ID – Golkar Party chairman Bahlil Lahadalia has responded to a proposal by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to limit the tenure of political party leaders to a maximum of two terms.
He said such matters should be left to each party’s internal mechanisms.
“Regarding party chairmanship, I think each party has its own system,” Bahlil said after attending the Golkar Party’s National Easter Reflection event in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Friday (April 24, 2026).
According to Bahlil, the proposed term limit would not pose an issue for Golkar, as its National Congress (Munas) typically results in the election of a new chairman, rather than leaders serving two full terms.
“In Golkar, it’s not about two terms. At every Munas, we usually have a new chairman. So for us, it’s nothing unusual,” he said.
He added that the tenure of Golkar’s chairman depends heavily on internal party dynamics. While some may serve only one term, others could potentially exceed two terms if backed by strong performance.
“Golkar is a democratic party. If it were fixed at two terms, some might not even reach that in Golkar—just one term. Two terms depend on circumstances. But if there are clear achievements, it’s possible to serve more,” said the Energy and Mineral Resources Minister.
The KPK previously stated that it had conducted a governance study on political parties aimed at preventing corruption, including recommending a two-term limit for party chairpersons.
Based on a 2025 study by the KPK’s Monitoring Directorate, four key aspects of party systems were identified for improvement, along with 16 recommendations.
“To ensure effective cadre regeneration, it is necessary to regulate the leadership tenure of party chairpersons to a maximum of two terms,” reads one of the recommendations. (dan)
