INDOPOSCO.ID – Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife have reportedly been taken into custody and flown out of Venezuela. The pair are said to be scheduled for detention at a holding facility in New York, the United States.
A military aircraft carrying the couple was reported to have landed at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, New York State, at around 5:00 p.m. local time on Saturday, or 5:00 a.m. WIB on Sunday (Jan. 4, 2025).
The information was obtained from several reports and circulating video footage.
According to an indictment unsealed and released by the US Department of Justice on Saturday, Maduro and several other individuals are set to face legal proceedings next week at the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
He faces multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, as well as conspiracy to possess such weapons and devices.
Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he had directly contacted US President Donald Trump on Saturday.
During the conversation, Mamdani voiced his opposition to what he described as an attempt at regime change that violates US federal law and international law.
Separately, a number of people staged a protest outside Newburgh Air Base to oppose US military actions in Venezuela, as reported by Xinhua via Antara.
On the same day, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, speaking during a session of the National Defense Council broadcast on national television, demanded the immediate release of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. (aro)
