INDOPOSCO.ID – Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has updated the death toll from floods and landslides that struck three provinces on the island of Sumatra, with fatalities now reaching 1,138 people. The data were recorded as of Saturday (Dec. 27, 2025).
“As of today, we have seen an increase in the number of fatalities to 1,138,” said BNPB Head of Data, Information and Disaster Communication Center Abdul Muhari during an online briefing on disaster response efforts in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra on Saturday (Dec. 27, 2025).
He emphasized that the government continues to extend its deepest condolences to all victims affected by the disasters that have hit several regions across Sumatra.
“Our prayers and deepest sympathies go out to the victims. Innalilahi wa innailaihi raji’un,” Abdul Muhari said.
Meanwhile, the number of missing persons remains in the hundreds. Joint search and rescue (SAR) teams are still working to locate the missing victims, although the chances of recovering bodies in residential areas are considered slim.
“The number of missing persons is still recorded at 163. A total of 449,846 of our brothers and sisters remain displaced,” Abdul Muhari, commonly known as Aam, explained.
BNPB previously reported that the death toll stood at 1,137 people on Friday night (Dec. 26, 2025), indicating one additional fatality recorded on Saturday. Flash floods and landslides have affected the three provinces in Sumatra since late November. (dan)
