INDOPOSCO.ID – Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his sympathy and condolences following the devastating floods that struck northern Sumatra, claiming hundreds of lives and causing widespread destruction.
“Please accept my deepest condolences for the numerous casualties and extensive damage caused by the flooding in northern Sumatra,” Putin wrote in his message addressed to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
In an official statement from the Russian Presidential Office, delivered through the Russian Embassy in Jakarta and confirmed on Sunday (Nov. 30, 2025), Putin said that the Russian people share in the grief of families who lost their loved ones in the disaster.
He also conveyed hopes that recovery efforts will progress swiftly so affected communities can return to a safe and stable life.
Several regions in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have been hit by flash floods and landslides since Tuesday (Nov. 25). The disaster has caused hundreds of fatalities and disrupted transportation routes, electricity lines, and communication networks.
Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that as of Saturday (Nov. 29), the death toll across the three provinces had reached 303, with 279 people still missing and 18 injured.
Of those fatalities, 166 were recorded in North Sumatra, 90 in West Sumatra, and 47 in Aceh. Meanwhile, the missing persons include 133 in North Sumatra, 85 in West Sumatra, and 51 in Aceh, according to Antara.
To support emergency operations, 11 helicopters from the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the national search and rescue agency Basarnas have been deployed to affected areas. In addition, six Navy warships (KRI) have been mobilized to assist with evacuations and aid distribution. (aro)
