INDOPOSCO.ID – The Indonesian government has prepared a total of 36,660 transport units across various modes to serve the public during the Eid homecoming and return travel period for Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijri/2026.
“We have prepared both the facilities and supporting infrastructure. The transport units include buses, ferry ships, aircraft, and trains,” Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said in Jakarta on Friday (March 6) evening.
He explained that the fleet includes around 31,300 buses designated to serve land travel for people heading to their hometowns across Java Island and other regions.
In addition, the government has prepared about 841 sea vessels and 254 ferry ships to support inter-island passenger mobility during the Eid travel period.
Meanwhile, in the air and rail sectors, the Ministry of Transportation has prepared approximately 372 aircraft and 3,893 train carriages to accommodate travelers.
“We are preparing the transportation facilities so they can accommodate people who will travel for the Eid homecoming,” he said.
Dudy further noted that the ministry is also conducting safety and operational feasibility inspections for all transport modes prepared for the Eid transport period to ensure passenger safety.
The inspections are carried out through several monitoring instruments, including ramp checks and surveillance across different transportation modes.
These inspections aim to ensure that all transport fleets used during the homecoming and return travel periods are fully fit for operation.
With roadworthy and safe fleets, the government hopes the public can travel for the Eid holiday with a greater sense of security and comfort.
According to Dudy, fleet inspections have actually been conducted since the transportation period for Christmas and New Year’s Day 2025/2026 and have continued in preparation for the Eid travel season.
The inspections are targeted to be completed before the start of the homecoming exodus so that all transportation facilities are fully ready for operation.
In addition to ensuring fleet readiness, the government is also preparing a digital monitoring system for Eid transportation operations integrated with various transport hubs.
The monitoring covers facilities such as terminals, seaports, airports, train stations, and ferry crossings that serve as key mobility points for travelers.
The digital system will allow the government to monitor conditions on the ground in real time and take swift action if congestion or operational disruptions occur.
The monitoring effort involves multiple stakeholders, including the Traffic Corps of the Indonesian National Police, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, and the National Search and Rescue Agency.
To support the monitoring system, the Ministry of Transportation has integrated around 7,100 CCTV surveillance points and deployed about 60 drones across 80 strategic locations.
The ministry projects that passenger movement during the 2026 Eid holiday will slightly decline by around 1.7 percent compared to the previous year, from 146.4 million people to approximately 143.9 million travelers.
The peak of the homecoming flow is expected on March 16 and March 18 after the government proposed a work from anywhere (WFA) policy to reduce congestion during the travel period. The proposal has received approval from President Prabowo Subianto, according to Antara.
For the return flow after the Eid holiday, the government has also proposed implementing WFA on March 25, 26, and 27 following the end of the collective leave period. (aro)
