INDOPOSCO.ID – An earthquake struck Nias Island in North Sumatra earlier this morning. According to the official website of the Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi dan Geofisika (BMKG), the quake registered a magnitude of 5.9.
“Earthquake tremors on Nias Island were felt at intensity (MMI scale) V in Gunung Sitoli, IV in West Nias, IV in North Nias, and IV in Central Tapanuli,” BMKG said on its official website on Sunday (April 19, 2026).
Based on BMKG data, the earthquake occurred at approximately 03:06 a.m. WIB.
The epicenter was located offshore, about 48 kilometers southwest of North Nias.
“The earthquake is categorized as shallow, with a hypocenter depth of 10 kilometers.”
BMKG reported that the epicenter was located at coordinates 1.14° North Latitude and 97.04° East Longitude.
“The public is advised to remain alert for possible aftershocks,” the agency stated. (nas)
