INDOPOSCO.ID – Israeli authorities have banned the holding of Eid al-Fitr prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem, citing security concerns amid the ongoing war with Iran. Nevertheless, on Friday (March 20, 2026), Palestinians called on Muslims to gather in the Old City to perform Eid prayers as close as possible to Al-Aqsa, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.Earlier, Israeli police were reported to have used batons, stun grenades, and tear gas against Palestinians praying outside the Old City walls in protest against the closure of Al-Aqsa during Ramadan.
Occupied East Jerusalem has entered the holiday period under a somber atmosphere. The Old City area, usually crowded with Palestinians ahead of Eid al-Fitr, appeared deserted, resembling a ghost town.
Israel has restricted access under a ban on public gatherings, while Palestinian merchants have been prohibited from opening their shops. Only pharmacies and essential goods stores have been allowed to operate, as reported by Anadolu via Antara.
