INDOPOSCO.ID – The 20th Group of Twenty (G20) Summit officially opened in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Saturday (22/11/2025). During the event, world leaders adopted a declaration emphasizing the importance of fairer and more sustainable global governance.
This marks the first time the G20 Summit has been held in Africa, with the theme “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability.”
The two-day meeting represents a significant step for Africa in strengthening the continent’s role in global governance and advancing development agendas that serve the shared interests of Global South countries.
In the declaration titled G20 South Africa Summit: Leaders’ Declaration, G20 members reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, with the United Nations as the cornerstone.
Leaders also highlighted that peace is a prerequisite for sustainable economic development and emphasized that international cooperation and multilateral solutions are essential to address global challenges, including inequality and economic instability.
“It is crucial for us to strengthen multilateral cooperation to tackle both existing and emerging risks and challenges in the global economy,” reads a section of the declaration.
The declaration also calls for increased global investment to meet the climate targets of the Paris Agreement, aiming to accelerate climate financing from billions to trillions of dollars worldwide.
All financial flows should align with these goals while enhancing capacity building, technology transfer, and voluntary funding agreements, particularly for developing countries.
The G20 declaration reaffirms the commitment to implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted at COP15 and encourages other countries to follow suit.
Additionally, women’s and girls’ empowerment remains a priority to advance gender equality.
“As we mark the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, we reaffirm our commitment to its full and effective implementation,” the official statement said.
The Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women held in Beijing last October was also acknowledged as a continuation of the spirit of the Beijing conference, according to Antara.
South Africa has officially held the rotating G20 presidency since 1 December 2024, becoming the first African nation to hold the position. The presidency will be passed on to the United States on 1 December 2025. (aro)
